You might think that high school football coaches and referees don’t see eye-to-eye on much, but they’ll be in lock step on one issue tonight.Both will be wearing blue wrist bands to try and raise awareness for prostate cancer.The promotion is called First Friday, and Ohio High School Athletic Assistant Commissioner Henry Zaborniak says the idea came from a former coach.
High school football players were also given cards that had information about prostate cancer on them.Zaborniak says hopefully it will encourage their fathers to get tested.
Political campaigning continued in Allen County today, this time with a visit from state Attorney General candidate Mike Crites, a Lima native...

The Democratic and Republican National Conventions are all over, and that means that political campaigns are ramping up.We’ve certainly seen our fair share in AllenCounty, as representatives from the Barack Obama campaign were in the area Thursday, and various organizations held watch parties for the conventions.Today Attorney General candidate and Lima native Mike Crites was in town, speaking at the Republican Luncheon this afternoon.He says it’s been a good campaign so far.
Crites added that he’s encouraged by a recent Columbus Dispatch poll that showed him making up eight points against Richard Cordray.

Firefighters were called to 2437 Wales Ave. just before noon today. Scanner traffic at the time indicated that a dryer at the home there had caught fire, and caused quite a bit of smoke as a result.

The investigation into a shooting on Lima’s north side continues today.The police were called to 1063 N. Main St. just before 5 p.m. Thursday afternoon after a dispute over a driveway lead to a man getting shot in the chest.35-year-old Damon Sharkey was taken to St. Rita’s MedicalCenter where he’s listed in critical condition today.No one has been arrested, and the case remains under investigation.

Another drug and weapons bust in Lima occurred late Wednesday night- thanks to the West Central Ohio Crime Task Force..A search warrant was executed at the residence of Neal Brown at 110 East 14th Street..3 kilos of powder cocaine- 15 grams of crack cocaine- as well as weapons and other drug paraphernalia were discovered at the residence..Brown was taken into custody and faces numerous charges..###

The Ohio Department of Health has notified the Environmental Division of the Allen County Health Department that mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus have been trapped in the city’s FaurotPark.The AllenCounty department has been collecting dead birds and trapping mosquitoes this summer to monitor for the virus and other diseases borne by the insect.Dave Rosebrock of the county health department says there are steps the public can take to protect against infection and anyone with a concern or question can call the environmental division:
There have been no cases of the West Nile Virus to humans in AllenCounty, but a handful of cases were found in other parts of the state.

After the shooting death of Tarika Wilson during a drug raid in early January, many people have had many things to say about law enforcement in the area.Area groups were given a chance to put those thoughts in writing with a series of roundtable discussions, which identified five main goals where the public thought improvement was needed.Those goals were announced in early June, and now an action plan for implementing them has been put together.
Lima Mayor Dave Berger and County Commissioner Dan Rieff met today to talk about the next steps to be taken, and also introduced the Community Stakeholders Roundtable Board, who will oversee those processes.Reiff says that all the board members were happy to be selected, and enthusiastic about getting to work.
The board members include: David Berger - Co-Chair Dan Reiff - Co-Chair Denise Barnes Michael Gallmeier Margie Glenn Sally Clemens Jennifer Lawson Ben Diepenbrock Ann Miles Bruce Opperman Juergen Waldick Alberta Shurelds Rufus & Mary Williamson Tommie Skipworth Mildred Stewart JacquelineTyre Jason Upthegrove Reverend Fayne Wise The board will meet for the first time on September 11th.They will organize the people that have been selected by the community, who will issue their first reports later this fall. Mold in the Allen County Board of Elections has been a point of contention in recent weeks; with employees and the director Keith Cunningham commenting that it’s causing them health issues.During a meeting of the board today, Cunningham once again stated the case for moving the BOE, saying it has to happen sooner rather than later.CountyCommissioner Dan Reiff says that there are options with some buildings already owned by the county.However Reiff says the move can’t happen until after the November election.
